Addressing Nursing Fatigue with Enovate Medical’s Encore RX2
It’s been a long year for everyone, but especially for those in the medical field. According to the National Academy of Medicine, clinicians of all kinds are experiencing alarming rates of burnout.
Nursing fatigue and burnout can have wide-ranging ramifications if not addressed promptly or effectively. It is estimated that 35% to 54% of nurses and physicians experience burnout.1
Burnout leads to mistakes – When nurses feel physically and mentally exhausted, working while depleted can lead to medical errors, physical injury, poor morale, high turnover, and even suicide. Additionally, nurse shortages and COVID concerns add to the stress nurses face daily. When you add the challenge of ever-changing rules and requirements, nurses and other medical professionals face ever-increasing burdens on the job.
Introducing the RX2 to help eliminate nursing fatigue – One of Enovate Medical’s goals as a company has been to incorporate the experience of nurses and medical professionals into our clinical solutions. We design our equipment and services to ease the stress and enhance the productivity of medical professionals – all to improve patient care and outcomes. We recently introduced the Encore RX2 medication delivery mobile workstation to address nursing fatigue within a range of clinical environments.
The Real Dangers of Nursing Fatigue and Injuries
Nursing is manual labor – Beyond the emotional stress of burnout, nurses risk physical injuries, including lower back pain. People don’t become nurses expecting a manual labor profession, but nurses experience 90% more back pain than the general population. Their rates even exceed heavy industry workforces.2 Combined with the burnout associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses put their physical and mental health at risk every day.
Nurses are the backbone – According to Tina Gerardi, a registered nurse interviewed by Nurse Journal, “Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. When they’re feeling overworked, physically and mentally exhausted, and not appreciated, it diminishes staff morale and can result in resignations and instability in the workplace.” 2
The nursing injury challenge – A research study in OR Nurse noted that although nurses have one of the highest rates of work-related musculoskeletal injury compared with other professions, efforts to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders in nurses have mostly been unsuccessful over the past 30 years.3
For this reason, Enovate Medical has built its entire line of products to improve ergonomics, enhance workplace efficiency, and give nurses the tools to do more in a day while reducing fatigue.
Addressing the Root Causes of Burnout and Fatigue in Medical Professionals
Nurture is after the fact – Most experts recommend adequate sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mental/emotional nurture to cope with “compassion fatigue,” but nurture is after the fact. Enovate Medical seeks to address burnout at the source – at the patient care site. Our solutions integrate into the patient care workflow and leverage ergonomics to empower nurses.
The Encore RX2 Reduces Nursing Fatigue
Enovate has designed the Encore RX2 as the industry’s lightest, most durable, and agile medication workstation to simplify bedside medication delivery while enhancing productivity, reducing physical stress, and combating nurse fatigue.
To achieve a 40 percent weight reduction over traditional medication carts, Enovate’s engineers removed the heavy base battery and replaced it with MobiusPower Plus. This next-generation power system offers flexibility for both non-stop mobility and wall-plug use. The lightweight EcoFlex power management system reduces the overall weight and maximizes the RX2’s power efficiency.
Workplace ergonomics deliver value
The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries reviewed 250 ergonomics case studies4 and found that improved Ergonomics:
- Reduces costs by reducing musculoskeletal disorders (example: back strain), lost workdays, and worker’s comp claims,
- Improves productivity due to good posture, less exertion, fewer motions, and better heights and reaches,
- Improves quality – Less frustration and fatigue allow nurses to give their best work.
- Improves engagement – The study found a 48% average reduction in employee turnover and a 58% average reduction in employee absenteeism.
- Creates a better safety culture – Good ergonomics demonstrates an organization’s commitment to safety and health.
“Nursing fatigue is a real challenge for many hospitals,” explained Kevin Bridges, Enovate’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “For nurses that administer medication and document at the bedside, the RX2 lightens their load and reduces unnecessary footsteps to the medication room. We want to remove any additional stress during their long 12-hour shifts.”
The Encore RX2 joins Enovate’s lineup of mobile EHR workstations – all designed with input from nurses and IT professionals – to enhance clinical productivity, improve ergonomics, reduce nurse fatigue, and simplify IT support.
