Battery Health or User Error? Enovate’s Rhythm Delivers the Verdict

Cordless mobile workstations have changed the way nurses deliver care. Cordless mobility lets nurses document in the patient’s electronic record right at the bedside, but a key to sustaining nursing productivity is maintaining a healthy population of batteries.

For this reason, Baptist Health of Jacksonville, Florida chose Enovate’s MobiusPower® system for their fleet of 650 mobile workstations. MobiusPower creates a more efficient, cordless, mobile workstation solution that stays up-and-running 24/7. Nurses never need to park, plug and wait for the battery to recharge. A six-second battery swap fully recharges the workstation.

Despite the productivity advantage of MobiusPower, some nurses were not realizing its benefits.

“We had nurses complaining, ‘My battery only lasts two hours.,’” Ty Ackerman, Infrastructure Technical Manager at Baptist Health, said. “The alleged short battery life was a mystery because we had replaced the batteries a year ago. Why are they lasting less than two hours now? I needed to understand why.”


Enovate Rhythm callout


Baptist Health had just implemented a pilot study of Enovate’s Rhythm Mobile Device Management System, so they turned to the system for the answer. Rhythm is a next-generation, cloud-based solution that provides real-time visibility into the location, health, and usage of a hospital’s fleet of mobile EHR workstations.

When the IT team reviewed the Rhythm data, they discovered that the nurses’ complaints about 2-hour battery life were unwarranted. The Rhythm data showed that nurses were swapping out batteries well before the charge was depleted. What’s more, they were pulling batteries from the charging station that weren’t fully charged. The data confirmed that Baptist did not need new batteries; their nurses needed an educational reminder.

“My Chief Nursing Officer used this data to educate the nurses, telling them, ‘Keep using the battery until the 20 minute alert,’” Ackerman said. “We created an educational card that also explained how the LED indicators show full-charge on the charging stations.”

Bottom line, the Rhythm system increased clinical productivity and proved there was no need to purchase new batteries. The data allowed the Baptist IT staff to provide better customer service to their nurses by identifying the root cause of the reported problem.
